Why do Nigerians carry their babies on their back and what happens if the baby falls? BattaBox finds out!

The backing of babies is a usual tradition in this side of the world. In a lot of African countries and for the purpose of this story, Nigeria, have embraced the tradition of the backing of babies as a relatively versatile and best way to keep the baby close to you. We at BattaBox sees this story to be valuable and we set out to do this for research purposes.

Folly is on the mission to research why African mothers value baby backing and the beliefs around it. The backing of a child is all shades of awesome not just to the mother but also the child; the child enjoys the warmness of the mother and the mother gets the hug of her child.

To back a baby, all you need is a piece of rectangular fabric and a mother’s back of course. The women we interviewed for the purpose of this research, share their idea and beliefs attached to backing a baby. The stated beliefs are:

With enough warmness of the mother’s back, the baby will not catch a cold.

Some babies are stubborn and do not like that they are been laid on the bed, they prefer to be on their mother’s back.

If you wrap a baby at your back in the cold season, they take your body heat and feel better.

If you back your baby on your back, his body is going to get stronger.

Also, there are superstitions about the falling of a baby off the mother’s back which are stated that:
The mother has to run naked to avoid the death of the future spouse; if the mother does not do it immediately, the following will happen:

if it is a girl child, 7 husbands will die.
And if it is a male child, 9 wives will die.

A lot has been said and believe are been expressed, what do you think?

Will you believe in backing your baby and for what purpose?

I wish our people know how superstitions are formed. They are just fear tactics to make our people do the right thing. In those days, there is no media to spread message. They have to use fear. If that superstition was not there, some mothers will be careless. No husband/wife will die if the baby fall but the baby may die or get some injuries.. I don’t have data to back this but I’m very sure more babies will be fallen from their mothers’ back among the Igbo’s than Yoruba’s. Our GO’s and Pastors are using same fear strategy nowadays. It’s working.

If you forget your baby in the car during hot weather, all your family members will run mad within 7 days.. I will start spreading that. May be that will save some lives.
