Tomato scarcity and the hike in price of perishable goods like garri and rice is beginning to Nigerians greatly. The prices of everything in markets have tripled and tomatoes especially has become really unaffordable.
“Its normally expensive but never this high,”
BattaBox presenters Odunayo and Kayode visited the popular Mushin perishable market in Lagos to talk to traders and customers about how the hike in tomatoes have affected their business.
“A basket used to be N20,000 ($60)but it now costs N45,000 ($120),” complains one of the market women
But what has prompted the scarcity of a vegetable like tomatoes that should be available to Nigerians in abundance?
“Its because some rich people are buying them directly to produce tomato paste,” replies one tomatoes seller
Tomato is one vegetable Nigerians cannot do without. It is used to cook our favorite jollof rice, stew and many other foods we eat everyday. But due to the recent development, people are beginning to look for alternatives to cook like eating gravies instead of stew or coconut rice in place of jollof rice.

My grandma just came from Benin city and was just telling us how 5 tomatoes
is 500 Naira I didn’t want to believe.
I called my mom the other and she was explaining this to me, i felt so bad,
but Nigeria why?? what is really wrong with this country.
Real reason: A pest known as Tuta absoluta has reportedly affected tomato
farms in Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina and Plateau states.
Fuel is high tomato too is high houses r high everything is high . Sorry

More tomatoes rut in Nigeria than are eaten. The problem is the
infrastructure (transportation) – to get the tomatoes down south from where
they are grown up North. Instead of the previous governments investing in
robust transportation, they have instead turned Nigeria into the largest
importer of tomato products in the world. So Nigeria now depends on India,
Italy, China e.t.c., for Tomatoes, while the (better quality) ones grown
locally simply rut away.
In a way, this scarcity is a good thing. It will awaken the people to the
truth and hopefully force the government to do something about it.

my sister lives in Nigeria and complained about the same thing. Solution,
grow your own don’t wait on the government.
