April is the month of awareness for Autism, therefore asktoks.com organised parents, families and loved ones of autistic children as well as the general public for a joint compassionate walk for Autism in Lagos.
“In this part of the world, people consider it as a curse,” says one lady
“Autism is not a death sentence, it is a disorder,” says one lady who joined in the walk
BattaBox presenter Odunayo attended the walk for autism and also spoke to asktoks.com founder, Ms Toks Bakare, a UK trained Behaviour Analyst who has over a decade of experience in the field of developmental psychology. She strongly believes in education that acknowledges multiple intelligence and the potential for all children, no matter their ability, to lead full and meaningful lives.
“Autism is a developmental condition that affects the way the brain works,” says Toks
Toks further explained some of the symptoms to characterize autism and how to spot an autistic child when you see one.
“For some people with autism, talking could be quite difficult,” she continues
Odunayo also got a mother who has an autistic son to share her experience
“As a mother i’m trying to cope,” the woman explains

What a wonderful way of raising awareness and support for people with
Autism. I’m sure that in time many more people will come to understand the
condition, however it starts with the passionate appeals of health
professionals, family and friends coming together to light the spark that
ignites the conciousness of society and steer it towards tolerance and
compassion. Education is key, everyone involved in providing it is to be
commended.
