Nigeria’s Carter bridge is close to collapse

Let’s bring you up to speed on the history of Carter Bridge; Carter Bridge was built in 1901 as one of the three bridges built with the sole aim of connecting Lagos Island and Mainland. It is the first of the three bridges presently completed in Lagos and a said agreement on construction of the 4th mainland bridge. The other two (2) completed apart from Carter Bridge are the Eko Bridge and Third Mainland Bridge.

Carter Bridge was built during the British colony in Lagos before Nigeria got her independence and was named after the then governor of the colony, Sir Gilbert Thomas Carter. And in the 1970s, it was demolished, redesigned, rebuilt and completed by 1973 presently linking Alaka-ijora, Iddo to Idumota, Lagos Island.

Back to the video, the Carter Bridge is a major route mostly plied by the residence of Lagos mainland so as to link them to the business region of the Lagos Island and it is one of the busiest. In the mornings and evenings, there are most times the issue of traffic and this is caused majorly by the activities too many commuters, trailer parking, and accidents.

In this video, our major focus is the state of dilapidation of the said bridge which is very critical and needs major attention and intervention of the government to quickly fix it to avoid issues of accidents in the region. We interviewed the regular drivers and the traders in the regions and they had a lot of things to say about this bridge. Let’s find out!!!
