Have you ever heard the saying, ‘Money talks’?

Does Money = Power?

We can’t deny the importance of money; however, many feel power is even more important than cash.

So BattaBox asked Odunayo to find out whether Nigerians think money is more influential than power.

“You must have the money. When you have the money then you must look for power. Money comes first before you can get the power,” one man answers.

Do you agree?

Money is just one dimension of power, (financial power). Money alone does not guarantee influence and getting things done. There are other domains of power which in general, is the ability to cause desired changes. Spiritual power makes you see into the future, perform miracles, etc. Intellectual power makes you a good thinker, generator of ideas and creator of solutions (which money on its own cannot give). Leadership & managerial power has to do with the development of a variety of skills like communication, delegation, teamwork, organisational and visionary skills which money on its own does not give. Political power can be gotten by money but this does not guarantee success unless the other dimensions of power listed earlier, are available.

In the short term, power is greater, but on the long haul money. It also depends on the type of power we are discussing. For instance A military coup leader has absolute power for a while, during this time, he can erase money or he can acquire money. A Military coup leader can wipe out all the rich people (ask Fidel Castro), but over time he needs money to carry out his agenda.

Let’s be honest here, in Nigeria money surpasses power. The reason is b’cos many of those in power today either the Federal, State of Local Government level arguably made use of money to get to that position. And as their in power, their main aim most times is to make more money b’cos some day the power won’t be there any more. Only the money they have acquired over time can make them have power over others.

For those of you that are familiar with Nigerian politics, especially in Lagos State, if Bola Tinubu ceases to have money again, I can bet my life that the level of power he has in politics will diminish completely.

So, humanly speaking (especially in Nigeria) money has more influence than power. But divinely (in regards to God) speaking, power has more influence than money.

    power always comes b4 money.

before you can have money in a society you need someone with power to create a system of currency and convince others to accept it. money(dollar bills) have very little value, a million dollars is only a heaping pile of cotton fibers and ink until some person(or group) decides to give it value(power)

so definitely power has more influence, a powerful enough person could simply reduce the value of your money and lessen its influence
