Street traders in Nigeria line the roadside selling bags, mobile phones, food, clothes, and much more – all to make a living to support their family. But often it’s not the job that is difficult, but the government, extortion, and a difficult economy and thieves.
BattaBox presenter Becky discusses with a variety of women street traders in Lagos, Nigeria about why they have to work on the roadside, selling their goods from mats on the floor or on their shoulders and heads, and the difficulties they face. Often the women traders must also travel for hours to get to their market from their family home.
“I am tired of this country now,” says one street trader. “May God send someone to help me!”
“Sometimes the government taskforce chases us and I fall into a pit as I run,” explains another trader.
“We might not make any sales throughout the day and must wait until the night when more customers come, until we make a sale,” says another Nigerian woman. “If the taskforce comes to seize our goods – we run – and then come back when they have left.”

Nigeria government are evil, they don’t care About the poor
It is so easy to create a space at the same spot…Lagos State govt should work with Railway Authority to build an over head market on that same spot….the traders will be on the top, while train can go under with no interference. it should be allocated to these individuals at a subsidized rate…..it is easy….and it can be done at other areas in Lagos State.
