Should Prostitution Be Legalised?

Nigeria’s National Association of Sex Workers – yes, we have an association for everything in Nigeria! – has called for prostitution to be legalised.

Prostitution is a controversial topic, so BattaBox hits the streets of Lagos to find out if people think it should be made legal to pay for sex.

The National Coordinator of the Nigerian Sex Workers Association, Amaka Anemo, has stated that legalisation of prostitution would help with two major problems – not just for Nigerian prostitutes, but Nigerian society:

1. legalisation would help reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS in the country.
2. legalisation would help reduce violence against sex workers.
3. also, sex workers will then be paying tax!

“Once a sex worker is infected with HIV, she can transmit it to as many people as possible by sleeping with just one man, who sleeps with his wife and probably his other girlfriend. And the girlfriend has a boyfriend who also has another girlfriend and it keeps spreading that way. So, one sex worker can transmit the virus to a hundred people,” Amaka Anemo said.

If prostitution is legalised, Anemo says and studies around the world shows, there will be a more conducive and safer environment for both the prostitutes and their clients, less stigmatisation, harassment from authorities, and safer opportunities for HIV/AIDS education about the hazards of prostitution.

Nigerians, however, seem divided on the subject:

“It’s not good, prostitution is not good, it should not be legalised!” says one woman.

“Is prostitution, is sex, good to be practiced outside marriage?” says one man.

“You are free to do anything once you have freedom of speech. So they should legalise it and let them do it,” says another man.

What do you think – should prostitution be legalised in Nigeria?

    Legalization is the only way.
You do not change the EXISTENCE of prostitution by criminalizing it.
Only the outlook of the poor women working as prostitutes will be better.

“Prostitution is not a good job”…..Yet, it is considered to be the oldest profession known to man…..Wow, cultural conditioning and reality at odds with each other….Food for thought!

it should be legalised. They should pay tax per night about 75% tax payable to the state government and thoroughly regulated.
