Timothy takes us into the Cat Market to discover Nigerian Belief about cats.

The Cat is small furry carnivorous mammal. They are often kept as house pets. Different tribes in Nigeria value cat companionship with human for varies reasons. But the popular belief about cat in Nigeria is to be scary and used for evil deeds.

Battabox Sent Timothy out to the Cat Market to find out from the cat sellers and rarer on how they keep these pets and what people perceive about the furry mammal.

Here are some of the comments:

“Cats are adorable creature, when i was younger, my grand mother used to rear them”.

“Cats absorbs diseases or any sickness from the one who rares them”.

“It is believed that cats run away from the one who is about to die”.

“Cats Pray for whoever rears them, they are like the pigeon”.

“Cats reared as pets are different from the ones in the bush, they are not as bad as people paint them”.

The mammals seems to fulfill a lot of magical needs. However these animals are no longer reared in these cities these days aside from those that sell them in the market for specific purpose.

It’s so sad to see the cats in those tiny cages. Every animal wants to be free. We focus on stupid things in Nigeria, and that’s why we can’t develop.

WOW! just when i was thinking of getting one.Its true about being careful with cats they need to be well taken care of with vaccines and immunizations or else they bring in fleas, parasites like toxoplasmosis which can cause birth defects and a few other illnesses. They were spot on about avoiding the saliva. The hairs can cause some people to have allergies;cough wheezing not TB lol!
