Meet Nigeria’s largest private art collector, with over 7000 sculptures, paintings, and other media. He also has over 55,000 photographs of Nigeria’s cultural festivals.
BattaBox presenter Odunayo Oti meets Yemisi Shylon, a prince in Ogun state. His private art collection dates includes artwork from the 9th century to the 21st century. He also feels it’s his duty to promote culture and art, and is setting up a gallery for the next generation to appreciate these magnificent works of art.
“I started collecting art work while I was at the university of Ibadan,” explains Yemisi Shyllon. “It grew into a passion and now a glorious obsession.”
Yemisi Shylon’s home and garden are filled with paintings and sculptures. At the entrance two large Eyo statues stand guard to welcome you and bid you farewell.
One of his favorite pieces of art is “The Pygmy in the Bronx Zoo” painted by a Nigerian lawyer.
“In Yoruba mythology the head is very powerful. You see that Obatala emphasises the importance of the head,” says Yemisi Shyllon as he shows his collection and a large female head sculpture in his garden.

He is not Nigeria’s foremost art collector though, Nigeria’s foremost art collector is the late great Professor Segun Adewoye (who also happens to be my uncle) Prof had the largest and most expansive most extensive art collection in Nigeria
