There are people who live by begging all around the world, and Lagos is not an exception. The thrilling thing about begging in Lagos is the way some of these beggars go around requesting for alms.
The systematic way some these well dressed beggars move around the street to beg for money makes Nigerians tag them as “Corporate Beggars”. How and why people react to these beggars is quite interesting.
Battabox Sends Warri Pikin out to the street of Lagos to get people comfortable enough to speak in pidgin English as to why they react to these Beggars the way they do.
Here are some of the comments made:
“once you give one money, another 5 will attack you. They take begging as stunt”.
“I don’t get angry when i see one, i understand what everyone is going through with the condition of the country”
“There is no money everywhere and they will still be asking you for money, can’t they work? There is work on the street”.
“When you see the person coming to beg you for money, it turns out they are more dressed than you and even look fresher than you”
“If you give them money, they will still be there the next day and everyday. That doesn’t make sense”.

*There are people who are genuinely neck deep into the cycle of poverty and the little amount you give them will certainly make an impact. Then we have the unscrupulous lots who on a daily basis take advantage of the “begging” outlet to fool the general public whilst lining their pockets with what I call free money. Because there’s a lot of dishonesty in our society, sadly the genuine beggars are seen as liars but how do you tell them apart? In every country you go, there are beggars but the numbers in Nigeria is shockingly high due to a disenfranchised society that’s been severely distabilised by vicious cycles of corruption led by our leaders*

I don’t know why Nigerians is accommodating too much beggars everywhere begging for money whether you’re disable or not you should be able to be useful for yourself and make money begging is scam the most annoying one is that you see these grown up guys pushing an old man on a wheel chair begging..why can’t these guys work hard and feed that old or disabled man..meanwhile is from this alms these guys and the beggar would feed from
It’s hard to decide who is truly needy and who is begging for the hustle…In metro Atlanta many beggars ( homeless) run game and play on the sympathy of the public ruining it for those who actually need help…I remember a man( beggar) who watched me go into a sandwich shop, I ordered my sandwich and ate half with the intent to save the other half for later…When I came out of the sandwich shop, the beggar asked for my sandwich I said “No” and kept walking…He followed me and DEMANDED that I give him my sandwich, by now I’m getting scared because he’s following me down the street and I still say “No” and walk faster…He angrily shouts “B*@¢H” at me, by now I’m getting angry so I shout back “Get it right, I’m a B*@¢H WITH A SANDWICH!!!” And kept it moving!!!

Very ironic that they’re not willing to help their own yet these Nigerians come to Europe they want help from the public kitty.
My visit to Nigeria has been very great. Coming from the US, I would trade this way of living for a simple way ooo. I visited Benin city also Lagos 4 time within two years. Humble peeps indeed. The “Fake American is grrrrrr. Honestly, living simple without to much stress to make $ just to pay for land that will never be urs n be very close to homelessness n not one person care, is a sad thing to overcome. My spirit n soul was at peace all the times I traveled. I LOVE Nigeria! !!
