Odunayo Sets out to discover if family planning really does exist in Nigeria!
Family Planning is the controlling/ spacing intervals of children within a couple building up a family. The Nigerian Population is said to be over 180 million people according to the united Nations, Of which an annual population growth of 2.7% was recorded between the year 2010 and 2015. Bearing this in mind one would think Nigeria should set up a scheme to cub this growth.
Odunayo sets out with the Battabox Team, to visit traditional maternity home and also ask people on the street to find out if they know about family planning and how many kids there are willing to conceive in the long run. Shocking revelations were discovered!
Here are some of the comments:
“I will like to have 5 children because my mom gave birth to 5”.
“I don’t have any interest in family planning”
“I will Space my children within 2 years”.
“Many of my patients wish to have many kids”.
“I don’t know about family planning, mine is for my husband to impregnate me and i give birth”.
The level of exposure and willingness about family planning and number of kids desired by these women shows that the prediction made for Nigeria’s population by 2050 to surpass the United States is sure to come to past. The forecast states that by 2050, Nigeria’s population would surpass that of the United State, and its population would have reached 400 million, and that by 2100 Nigeria’s population would have risen to one billion possibly beating china’s population.

BUT BUT!!!! Make we dey very very careful about this family plannung thing, Just like one of the pregnant woman for the video talk, ” her aunty wey do family planning, pass through WAHALA before she fit born another pikin, some other people come start to dey comot blood, dey bleed, some start to dey fat.. All this na bad effrect of wetin dem dey call ” Misguided family planning”
just as I talk before, to plan family good, but make we open our eyes when e turn to family and pikin matter, becaue as we dey talk right now, many oyibo countries and companies dey sponsor our black doctors to dey use family planning to dey do many bad bad things to our mothers. Make una remember the suffer wey we go through from oyibo people wey call themself Colonial masters, all the kill wey dem kill our grand grand papa dem, and the thief wey dem thief our natural resources, BUT Today, for this 21st century them no dey come directly come shoot us with gun, na ChEMICAL wey dem dey put inside food and medicine na e be there gun now. Yes, the solution for homeless pikin for street na Poverty, this poverty come from many things, like : bad government, politics, disorganisation, no grassroot community training, no education about food and agriculture, many many other things wey our thief thief government no dey do well. See Chinese people wey plenty like sand, dem plenty pass us, But their government dey do well and them dey organised, e get when dem stop to dey born more than one pikin, but now dem see say dem population, make dem for no go extinct or reduce, na e make dem start to dey born again.
Again, my people make una shine una eyes for dis Family planning matter oo, make sure say una TRUST the doctor or person wey dey give una any medicine for this planning,. Because many of our black people wey dey America don take oyibo medicine for family planning and because of dat, dem no fit BORN PIKIN again for their life. Great work! As an advocate of family planning I think it’s important for us to emphasis more on the life saving aspect than population. Saving the lives of women and children is far more than population growth.

Many evil health organizations have came into Africa and used our people as testing grounds for dangerous medications unfit for human use. These women are right to be hesitant to embrace new ideas from unknown people. How many organizations have been caught sterilizing African women against their will!! If education is to be done, let it be done by Africans.

In addition to being a woman with experience with birth control, 4 years ago, I started a reproductive justice organization. Regardless of geographical location, poverty and education affects family planning. The women who expressed skepticism about birth control/contraceptives are not entirely incorrect. Birth control, especially in its most popular form as the pill can result in weight gain, and prolonged vaginal discharge. In extreme cases, it can cause depression, suicidal tendencies, and strokes. Every woman’s body reacts differently to various contraceptive options which is why women in the West will often try numerous methods before finding one that works for them. Unfortunately, due to poverty, most Nigerian women don’t have multiple contraceptive options and are justifiably skeptical of the few options provided to them.
