The comments are have been extremely controversial so BattaBox hits the streets of Lagos to ask Nigerians – is Nigeria a “shithole”?

When Trump talked about Africa, he also reportedly stated that Nigerians moving to the USA would be so in love with America that they would never “go back to their huts” in Africa.

“Everybody has problems in this country,” says one young girl, agreeing with Trump.

“We need to decide for ourselves, are we living in a shithole country.” says one young man. “We must throw it back in Trump’s face.”

“I am proud to be an African!” says Lagosian.

“Tell me we’re developing, tell me we’re not there yet, but don’t tell me we’re a shithole,” argued one Lagos trader.

“Donald Trump is a troublemaker!” says one Nigerian baba.

“Our health sector is not okay today, but that’s not the reason our African leaders fly abroad for healthcare,” says one young Nigerian man. “They fly to foreign hospitals because they want to show us class, that they are at a level we simply cannot reach.”

The problem is that, whenever leaders across Africa are ill, they immediately fly abroad for treatment. This indicates two problems – one, that the healthcare systems in Africa are not good enough for our own presidents, and secondly, why do our own presidents not invest more money into our healthcare systems to ensure they are good enough – and what happens to the money they do invest?

For example, the presidential clinic in Nigeria’s Aso Rock, is supposed to be the pinnacle of healthcare in Nigeria, to care for our president, as well as training medical personnel. In the 2017, over 3 billion Naira was allocated to Nigeria’s State House Medical Centre. And, in the nation’s 2016 budget, the Aso Rock clinic was allocated N3.219 billion, which was also set to ensure the completion of on-going construction work, procurement of drugs and other medical equipment.

And, yet, Nigeria’s president Buhari recently spent 104 days in London for treatment. The Aso Rock hospital clinic equipment is apparently largely shutdown.

Nigeria’s health budget for 2017 is 4.17%. To put this in contest, the USA spends at least $7,000 per citizen, or about N3.5 million. In comparison, Nigeria will spend N1,688 per head for a whole year.

“We don’t have good infrastructure, no good hospitals, no good qualitative healthcare in Africa, so I think it’s not a welcome development,” says one young Nigerian lady. “We need a law that can put a stop to people going abroad for medical treatment, I think they would improve on our local hospitals.”

“Our politicians are just sell-outs,” says a young businessman. “They campaign and say they will change the system and improve hospitals, but then they sell-out.”

The event was a blast with live music, original Naija food, and plenty plenty people!

“It is the season to give,” says BattaBox Presenter Lolade as she everyone who was attending the event how much they would give. One Nigerian man would give the shirt off his back, and another the shoes off his feet, but perhaps the most surprising was someone giving their gold watch to Nigerian good cause.

“How much is too much to give to Nigeria?”

“I don’t think that wealth has been amassed yet by one person,” says one Naija guy. “But I just hope that whatever is given, is used in the right way.”

Donald Trump!

With Trump closing in on Hilary’s narrow lead and the race to the White House almost at it’s Washington DC finish line, more and more people, especially foreigners, are asking themselves one question…

Who should I vote for???? Donald Trump or Hilary Clinton?

Lolade asked Nigerians based in New York City who they want the next United States President to be and this is what they had to say…

“Definitely not voting for Trump,” one young woman tells Lolade.

“Hilary…I think she has the experience. She has been there before,” a young man says.

“Do you know any Nigerians that are going to vote for Trump?”

“As a matter of fact I do. I have tried to talk her out of it. I have no clue what she sees in Trump,” one woman responds.

“I’m not voting for any of them. I don’t trust any of them so I’m not voting.”

“Hilary. I’m a Democrat. I don’t care what happens. I will always vote Democrat.”

“Would you leave America if Trump wins?” Lolade asked.

“Ermmmmm,” one lady wasn’t so sure.

“I’m going back to Nigeria…Immediately because that’s my home, I don’t want to take anymore insult from anybody,” one man proudly states.

Lolade asked the Nigerians how important the election is to them as Nigerians and she received a number of interesting answers. One lady was concerned about immigration laws as she has family back home and one man felt Nigerians are being “marginalized”.
