Should a wife give her wages to her husband to manage for the family household? This is certainly the way homes in Nigeria were run in the past, but is it still true for the modern couple?

BattaBox presenter Odunayo takes to the streets of Lagos, Nigeria to ask women whether they should surrender their income to their husbands.

“In this part of the world, submission is an important part of marriage, but would Nigerians submit their income to the husband at the end of every month?” say Odunayo.

“It’s not as if it’s bad, but I worked for it because I have bills to pay!”

“No, why would I do that? It doesn’t make sense,” says a young Nigerian woman.

“Yes, of course, I would give my money to my husband. What concerns him, concerns me,” says one woman.

“Yes, as a Christian I’m not supposed to hide anything from my husband so I would give it to my husband,” explains one trader.

What If You Catch Your Partner CHEATING On You?

What do you do if you catch your partner cheating on you?

BattaBox wants to find out what exactly is cheating, and how would you punish your partner if you found out they were cheating on you.

“If you catch someone cheating on you – they can be stoned to death if you are married, if you are not married then they should be caned,” says one young Nigerian man. “That’s what my religion says.”

“If you cheat and have an affair on your partner, the punishment should be castration,” exclaims a young Nigerian woman.

Cheating or having an affair is described as being sexually unfaithful in your relationship. And many Nigerians appear to agree as almost everyone (but not all o!) said that even a small kiss on the lips should be considered cheating on your husband or wife.

“Holding hands or kissing on the cheek is fine, but mouth to mouth with someone’s wife is cheating, and can cause you to come to blows with the other man,” explains a Nigerian business man BattaBox asked in Lagos.

But BattaBox wanted to really explore the theme of cheating in Nigeria, and so also asked if people, if they don’t catch their husband or wife with the other person, would they want to know, or if they were cheating – would they tell?!

“No, you shhould not tell your partner if you cheat on them – it’s not easy – and not everyone can take it,” laughs on Nigerian lady. “for example, like me, I don’t want to hear it, speaking from my own experience. What I don’t know, won’t kill me.”

“If you cheat on your partner just once, if it’s not a constant thing, then fine – it’s easy to forgive and forget,” says one Lagos guy.

“If you trust them, maybe you can trust them to tell them,” says one girl.

But what happens if you find out that your partner cheats on you with someone else? What should be their punishment?

“You can go on a break, for a few months, and then you can maybe try it again,” says a Nigerian man.

“I would not pick her call,” says one man. “You can end the relationship.”

Who is the Decision Maker – Husband or Wife?

Nigeria is a patriarchal society – men are normally head of the household. But who is the really best decision maker – the husband or wife?

“I am the best decision maker in the household, because I am the authority and the head of the house,” explains one man on the streets of Lagos. “She can only rub minds with me.”

Nigeria is traditionally a conservative country, we respect our religious values and often believe in hierarchy in the household. Nigeria is a patriarchal society. So BattaBox Presenter Odunayo wanted to find out – who is decision maker of the home – the husband of the wife? The man or the woman?

Marriage is a lifetime commitment with a mutual understanding between the husband and wife in order to make the marriage work. Numerous campaigns for women’s rights in the West and across the world, such as the recent #MeToo campaign, aim to raise awareness to equal opportunities and sexual harassment of women. But in Nigeria there are many obstacles for women’s rights to overcome.

“Definitely, it should be the man, the husband – let us not deceive ourselves,” says a middle-aged Lagos businessman. “And the wife should be supportive.

“I am the best decision maker in the Nigerian house, because I should know more than my wife because I am head of the family and I am more mature and experienced than her,” explains an older Nigerian trader.

Even some Nigerian women agree that the husband is the best decision maker, as a young lady explained – “The man is the best decision maker because he is head of the home.”

Nigerian women are not “docile” in society, and although it is common for the man to control the finances of a home, women are increasingly equally educated and finding work to help provide for the family, especially in the big cities like Lagos.

However, Nigerian women regularly rank lower than men in development indices across the country. In particular, domestic violence, gender biased laws, and harmful traditional practices. The government has implemented various policies and strategies to combat the problem of inequality such as female development centres, gender equality policies, and more women in government.

And, not everyone in Nigeria agrees that the husband is the best decision maker of the household, especially among the women:

“We both can make decisions, it’s not for the man alone, but for the husband and wife,” says one Lagos lady.

“Two heads are better than one,” says a young woman with a smile. “We should both make decisions.”

Bride price is the amount of money, property, or other form of wealth paid by a groom or his family to the parents of the woman he is just about to marry.

It is an established principle in Nigeria that the payment of bride price is essential for the validation of any marriage regardless of the tribe.

Can Single Mums Find Love Again?

Relationships are hard and so is raising children, so unfortunately some single mothers find it difficult to find a partner other than the father of their child.

There are so many reasons some single mother’s find a new relationship challenging…

Some men don’t want to be responsible for another man’s child, some consider the woman to be carrying too much ‘baggage’ and want someone to start a family with, not someone that already has one of her own. There are loads of reasons that many single mothers find it difficult to find love after having children but today BattaBox wants to be optimistic and ask Nigerians if they believe it is possible for single mums to find love again. Fingers crossed that they do!

“There’s nothing impossible for God to do. If God is interested in their case, he can provide another person for them,” one lady laughs.

“It’s very possible. Mixing with people, going out…” another lady tells Odun.
