American president Donald Trump described countries in Africa – including Nigeria – as well as Haiti and El Salvador as “shithole countries” during a White House meeting.

The comments are have been extremely controversial so BattaBox hits the streets of Lagos to ask Nigerians – is Nigeria a “shithole”?

When Trump talked about Africa, he also reportedly stated that Nigerians moving to the USA would be so in love with America that they would never “go back to their huts” in Africa.

“Everybody has problems in this country,” says one young girl, agreeing with Trump.

“We need to decide for ourselves, are we living in a shithole country.” says one young man. “We must throw it back in Trump’s face.”

“I am proud to be an African!” says Lagosian.

“Tell me we’re developing, tell me we’re not there yet, but don’t tell me we’re a shithole,” argued one Lagos trader.

“Donald Trump is a troublemaker!” says one Nigerian baba.

Nigerian Paints TRUMP as African Military Dictator

America’s President Trump may have low ratings in America, but in Nigeria, despite his nationalist rhetoric, Trump is a popular president.

And one Nigerian street painter, has found his muse! On display at his street stall, in a large painting of President Trump, but with a difference – he’s in a Nigerian military uniform, reminiscent of Nigeria’s old military dictators such as Abacha or IBB.

“I need to be creative and I painted Donald Trump in the military uniform of a dictator because of people dying in our country, Nigeria,” explains Sunshine Artworld, the painter. “Donald Trump is a business man, but he acts like a military dictator.”

In a Poll Research Survey, a poll in 2017 found that 67% of Nigerian view Donald Trump favourably. One of the few countries globally to hold such an favourable opinion, especially since Trump promotes particular nationalist policies, such as a wall along the Mexican border.

According to TweetMaps, over 700,000 Nigerians follow Trump on Twitter – 2% of his total followers, the 5th highest share of Trump’s followers are Nigerians! (US, UK, India, Canada, Nigeria!)

“Trump is not just wearing a dictator’s military uniform in the painting – he’s wearing a Nigerian military uniform. So, the painting is trying to depict something about his personality. So it tells me that Trump is no different from what we have in Nigeria,” explains a Lagos trader as he explains what he thinks the painting means.

President Trump rarely says much about Nigeria, but in June 2017, he met two of the kidnapped Chibok girls – Bishara and Pogu – who managed to escape. 217 girls were kidnapped in 2014 by Boko Haram in Northern Nigeria and the #BRingBackOurGirls hashtag campaign was launched.

But among the people we asked – opinions of Donald Trump’s American presidency remain mixed so far.

“I would buy the painting to mock the American system,” says the Lagos trader.

“I wish I could have been in that White House to see him one on one,” says Sunshine Artworld. We wonder if Donald Trump himself will watch the video and buy a copy of the painting!

Who should I vote for???? Donald Trump or Hilary Clinton?

Lolade asked Nigerians based in New York City who they want the next United States President to be and this is what they had to say…

“Definitely not voting for Trump,” one young woman tells Lolade.

“Hilary…I think she has the experience. She has been there before,” a young man says.

“Do you know any Nigerians that are going to vote for Trump?”

“As a matter of fact I do. I have tried to talk her out of it. I have no clue what she sees in Trump,” one woman responds.

“I’m not voting for any of them. I don’t trust any of them so I’m not voting.”

“Hilary. I’m a Democrat. I don’t care what happens. I will always vote Democrat.”

“Would you leave America if Trump wins?” Lolade asked.

“Ermmmmm,” one lady wasn’t so sure.

“I’m going back to Nigeria…Immediately because that’s my home, I don’t want to take anymore insult from anybody,” one man proudly states.

Lolade asked the Nigerians how important the election is to them as Nigerians and she received a number of interesting answers. One lady was concerned about immigration laws as she has family back home and one man felt Nigerians are being “marginalized”.
