“It’s very difficult as an African man because I’m not a lazy man!” says one man.

“In African culture you must work to provide for the family.”

But not everyone agrees:

“Yes, certainly, there’s nothing wrong with that,” says one man. “Otherwise you are killing the woman slowly.”

However, even many women from across Africa support the general consensus that African men should be the breadwinner of the family.

“From where I come from in Ghana – men go out to work, not stay at home,” says one woman.

“For my husband to be a stay-at-home dad? No it won’t be possible!” says one woman.

A variety of reasons are given for why a man should be the main provider of the family home – that is in the culture, that the man is head of the household, that is a natural thing, sometimes even a religious reason.

It comes as many men in the UK are beginning to experiment with the idea that the man can stay at home to look after the family, as women’s rights and equality and feminism rises.
