Nigerians Walk For World Sickle Cell Day

In Nigeria, 1-in-4 people are healthy carriers of the sickle cell gene and over 150,000 children are born annually with symptomatic sickle cell anaemia.

“Sickle cell is not a disease, its a disorder,” says one woman

Battabox presenter Odunayo and some fellow Nigerians joined the rest of the world to commemorate the 2016 World Sickle Cell Day on June 11th 2016 as designated by the United Nations, to draw attention and create necessary awareness to the problems posed by sickle cell disorder.

“It’s to create awareness and show people what can be done,” says one woman participating in the charity walk

“Sickle cell is a terrible sickness that you have to take care of and avoid,” replies another man

While talking to some people living with sickle cell during the walk, Odunayo asked them how they have coped living with the disorder and how to prevent a meltdown.

“If you know what triggers your disease, you can curb it,” says one lady living with sickle cell

Some of the participants of the walk were professionals, celebrities, friends of people with SCD and SCD warriors, to bring awareness to a cause that the UN has tagged a public health problem.

Meet The Oldest Woman Living With Sickle Cell Disorder At 90

As recently as 1973, the average lifespan for people living with sickle cell was 14 years, but currently, the life expectancy of sickle cell patients can be up to 50 years and over.

“When a person has hemoglobin F, and is a sicker, he would survive longer,” says Professor Kehinde of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.

BattaBox presenter Odunayo Interviews Alhaja Asiata Adupe Onikoyi Laguda , the oldest person living with sickle cell in the world. She talks about life as a sickle cell patient and how she’s been able to overcome it so far.

“None of my children has sickle cell,” she says

Alhaja Laguda turned 90 on November 1st 2015 and was celebrated as the worlds oldest person living with sickle cell. She also had an advise for parents with sickle cell children.

“Give them balanced diet and don’t let them have mosquito bites” she concludes

Sickle cell disorder is a group of disorders that affects hemoglobin, the molecule in red blood cells that delivers oxygen to cells throughout the body.

Living With Sickle Cell In Nigeria (Part 1)

Before getting married,every couple is advised to get tested to know their blood group and genotype to prevent having sickle cell children.

“Nigeria has about 2/3 of sickle cell disease in the entire world,” says Prof Kehinde

BattaBox presenter Odunayo visits spoke to Professor Michael kehinde, a doctor who treats sickle cell patients at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, and he gave us a breakdown of how sickle cell affects the body and how it could be prevented.

“Sickle cell is a disease of the blood common in blacks,” says Prof Kehinde

Odunayo also spoke to some people living with sickle cell who attend counselling at the clinic every week.

“People tend to look at you like a weakling,” recounts one lady
