Are inter ethnic marriages acceptable in Nigeria?

Nigeria has 371 different ethnic groups (or tribes!), each with their own unique language, culture, and history. But there has often been a society stigma against marriage between different ethnic groups in Nigeria. However, particularly in the large cities such as Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, it appears Nigerian society is becomeing more tolerant and metropolitan.

“The tradition has changed, my children should marry someone from anywhere,” says an enthusiastic Lagos trader. “Everyone should become mixed up.”

“I would allow my children to marry any inter ethnic tribe in Nigeria – if they find the bone of their bone,” says another young man.

The top six largest ethnic groups in Nigeria, in order, are: Hausa, Yoruba, Igno, Ijaw, Kanuri, Fulani.

However, inter ethnic marriages are still frowned upon in many areas in Nigeria, especially rural areas and traditional families. Reasons often include cultural pride, clashes over cultural perspectives (such as gender roles, money, etc), and challenges for families to adapt to new languages, food, and even hundreds of years of tribal history and racism against other ethnic groups.

Inter ethnic violence is sadly all too common in Nigeria, with threats and attacks against other tribes often spilling into the political sphere.

However, down on the street, people are making their own unions.

“I would accept love from whatever ethnic group it comes from – love knows no tribe in Nigeria,” says a young Nigerian business man.

Can Single Mums Find Love Again?

Relationships are hard and so is raising children, so unfortunately some single mothers find it difficult to find a partner other than the father of their child.

There are so many reasons some single mother’s find a new relationship challenging…

Some men don’t want to be responsible for another man’s child, some consider the woman to be carrying too much ‘baggage’ and want someone to start a family with, not someone that already has one of her own. There are loads of reasons that many single mothers find it difficult to find love after having children but today BattaBox wants to be optimistic and ask Nigerians if they believe it is possible for single mums to find love again. Fingers crossed that they do!

Here is what some Nigerians had to say…

“There’s nothing impossible for God to do. If God is interested in their case, he can provide another person for them,” one lady laughs.

“Yes…but it depends on her age,” a woman says.

“It works better if the man knows at an early stage,” one man says.

“Yes they can if they position themselves and they have a plan,” another lady answers.

“It’s very possible. Mixing with people, going out…” another lady tells Odun.

“How long should one round of sex last?”

Here are some of the people of Lagos’ interesting answers…

“At first you will start slow…as you dey go ‘bang bang bang’ you go make sure say you dey count reach 400…after 400 the next 100 nah speed,” one man explains to Bolly.

“It takes me 3 to 4 minutes,” another states.

“Only someone on a suicide mission will spend 20 minutes on one round of sex,” one man claims.

“I am blessed with strength, I can go 15 to 20 minutes without coming for the first time!”
