That’s right! 93 million people in 21st century Nigeria are living without electricity!

So BattaBox teamed up with the Africa Progress Panel, an advocate for equitable and sustainable development for Africa, to find out what life is like for the average Nigerian.

Here are some of their informative answers…

“When was the last time you had electricity in your area?”

“Two three weeks”

“Almost six months.”

“The heat is too much…my health. When the heat is too much I vomit.”

“We don’t have water.”

“It has distabilized our business.”

Since the privatization of the power sector in Nigeria from National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) to Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), the distribution of power have gone from bad to worst, making life even more difficult for Nigerians.

“When it was NEPA, we get power one day on, one day off,” says Mr Adewunmi ” But now power is unpredictable,” he continues

BattaBox interviews two families in Lagos. – The Sagoe family and the Adewunmi family live two different lives but equally suffer from lack of power and constant blackouts everyday.

“We need power for literally everything,” Mrs Sagoe complains “When there is no light, i can’t do my homework,” complains Mrs Sagoe’s daughter

But how many hours of light do people in Nigeria get in a day?

‘We have light about 5 or 6 hours a day,” Mrs Sagoe and Mr Adewunmi confirms

Almost every home in Nigeria has a petrol or diesel generator which they power on to either watch TV, charge phones and do other basic things around the house, but circumstances like shortage of fuel in the country (which has become a norm)makes petrol even more expensive and hard to get.

“We spend N15,000 (about $70) on fuel monthly,” explains Mr Adewunmi

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and also known to be the “Giant of Africa”, but people in Nigeria still suffer major blackouts and lack of electricity on a daily basis.
