Our BattaBox presenter, Adeola, went to check out the best Kilishi food joints in Abuja, Nigeria to find out what are the different types of Kilishi you can buy, and how they taste.

“People come from America, Germany, London, Lagos to his place in Abuja to buy Kilishi,” explains one beef jerky trader in Abuja. “People know to ask, when you come to Abuja, collect Kilishi for me!”

Kilishi is made by firstly, buying a cow (!), and then after its been killed, you chop and slice teh beef into thin, long strips. The meat is left near a coal fire to cook for maybe 4 hours. Then the meat is covered in a thick paste or sauce, of peanuts, onions, salt, and other spices. The Kilishi is then put onto drying boards and left in the sun to dry and become crispy. The final, spicy taste is very similar to America’s Beef Jerky.

The main difference between beef jerky and kilishi is in the spicy sauce, and many of the different varieties Adeola tastes have different spicy strengths! For example, the “red” kilishi is the hottest, and the “white” kilishi as the least pepper sauce.

And the best place to buy Kilishi is in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria.

“Kilishi and Abuja are like wife and husband,” laughs Adeola, BattaBox presenter. “It’s taste it fabulous, and it can last over a year.”

The beef jerky snack originated from northern Nigeria, where the dry weather and hot sun is perfect for cooking the Nigerian food snack.

The Kilishi can then keep for over a year without any change to its taste (just don’t put it in the fridge!)

Firstly, the best can be found on the streets of Lagos, Nigeria! So BattaBox Presenter Fluorin YP hits the streets of Lagos to find out where to find and how to cook the best Nigerian snacks.

“Nigerian snacks are so important in this life,” says Fluorin YP. “So today, I will be finding all the best Nigerian snacks and small chops, if you are a foodie and cannot fast for 20 seconds then you are in the spirit with me!”

The best Nigerian street snacks that BattaBox buys in our Lagos video include grilled chicken with tomato and hot pepper paste for N500; egg roll and meat pie for N100 from a street seller cart; groundnuts for N50; Popcorn and groundnuts for N100 best bought from a Lagos street hawker in a nylon bag; fried potato or yam for N10 each; fried plantain; and many more Nigerian snacks.

The variety comes from the different foods and crops we have in the country, that can be used for fresh and cheap ingredients. And prices of the small chops on streets of Lagos, although it’s gone up recently with inflation, average at about N100.

“Akara, Puff Puff, Moi Moi, Egg Roll, Buns, Fish Roll,” says one hungry Nigerian businessman. “They are my favorite and definitely the best Nigerian snacks.”

“Samosa, plantain, potato, Akara, fish and turkey,” says one Lagos trader. “They are my favorite Nigerian snacks.”

The main method of cooking any snack is with a charcoal grill on the roadside, or deep-fried in large burnt pan with plenty of palm oil. And Nigeria may be a hot country, but we like our food also served hot and fresh.

And all Nigerian street snacks are best washed down with Fura de Nunu for N100, which is a white liquid mixture of millet and milk, so it becomes fermented with a thick consistency.

Firstly, coat the fresh fish in flour and deep fry so it’s in a tasty batter for about five minutes. Our street chef recommends using plenty of oil and a wood fired heat.

Make sure you can hear that delicious, mouth-watering, crackling sound.

Take a big spoon and then ladle the fried fish out of the oil. But be careful the oil is hot. Nigeria food likes plenty of oil, often palm oil. This will then soften the fried fish and bones.

Fried Fish and Garri in Nigeria used to cost between 10-20 Naira, but in the recent recession, costs have gone up to over 100 Naira. But still, most fresh Lagos street food fried fish and garri will be sold out in maybe ten minutes. Plenty of customers will come when they smell the aroma.

“I like to take two pieces of fried fish and garri because I’m a BattaBox big boy who likes his Nigeria food!” says Warri Pikin.

“Things are very hard in this country o,” says one customer who has come for his Nigeria food. “So fried fish and garri is cheap and plentiful.”

Garri is a popular Nigeria food, a staple, made from cassava flakes. To make the Garri, wash it in water or milk, and then mix with sugar.

“In the current Nigerian economy, this is normal Nigeria food!” says the customer.

The event not only promoted exercise but also healthy eating.

“It’s amazing! I feel like we are slowly becoming more conscious of what we are putting into our bodies and how we are taking care of our bodies,” one young lady explained.

There were many different vendors on site that provided food, personal trainers and sportswear. It was a “one stop shop for everything fitness in Lagos”.

Fine but if you want the seller to grind them for you, you must pay extra.

Why?

Because the price of oil for the grinding machine has increased.

So BattaBox sent our presenter Adeola to Ketu Market – Her mission?

To see if she could buy the ingredients she need to cook rice and stew for under 1000 naira like she used to before ‘change’ occurred and let’s just say the task wasn’t as simple as she thought it would be…

“Make I buy tomato and pepper from you, 300, make you ground for me 50 naira, then you give me onions, 50 naira,” Adeola instructs.

“No onions 50 naira for Nigeria now o!” the lady shakes her head, “You no know?” she tells Adeola.

“One carton of fish I dey buy am 30,000 before now na 12,000 naira,” one market woman laments.

“Fish is even more costlier than meat now,” a potential customer agrees with the seller.

“Rice was 15,000, 12,000 but now, the last I bought was 20,000 naira,” one man states.

“We are not selling like before,” a lady shakes her head.

“If you taste this boli, you will forget this your interview and start selling this boli, it’s a very nice business, you can see people are even patronising us from everywhere,” one man promises as a customer grabs something from the fire.

“We sure can see, they are actually taking the chicken away from it though,” McCreeda says.

“The way we prepare it, the onion…slice it, put oil, pepper…and if you have money, you buy coke,” the same man responds when McCreeda asks him what makes his boli so special.

BattaBox presenters Odunayo and Kayode visited the popular Mushin perishable market in Lagos to talk to traders and customers about how the hike in tomatoes have affected their business.

“A basket used to be N20,000 ($60)but it now costs N45,000 ($120),” complains one of the market women

But what has prompted the scarcity of a vegetable like tomatoes that should be available to Nigerians in abundance?

“Its because some rich people are buying them directly to produce tomato paste,” replies one tomatoes seller

Tomato is one vegetable Nigerians cannot do without. It is used to cook our favorite jollof rice, stew and many other foods we eat everyday. But due to the recent development, people are beginning to look for alternatives to cook like eating gravies instead of stew or coconut rice in place of jollof rice.
