Do Nigerians prefer to pay their tax or tithe? It may seem like a frivolous question, but the answers provide a revealing insight into the state of Nigeria.

For those who don’t know, a tax is a compulsory contribution a citizen must pay to their state government, most often on your income or business profit. A tithe is a voluntary contribution taken by the church or mosque, often one tenth of your earnings, to be used to support the church, pastors, and charitable work.

“I would rather pay my tithe,” explains one Lagos trader. “Who does paying your tax help? I’ve not seen any effect of paying my tax on the economy.”

Paying tax provides more revenue for governments to provide infrastructure, healthcare, education, and much more. The more Nigerians that pay tax, the more they theoretically feel they have a stake in the country and thus democratic process, encouraging them to vote, and so encouraging politicians to put taxes to better use for the citizens. Many companies must pay their workers salaries automatically from their salaries, but many self-employed do not pay their taxes in Nigeria. Many Nigerians are concerned that politicians simply steal the money for themselves.

“I’m a citizen, and I know it’s illegal for me to pay my tax, but I’ve not paid tax ever once before,” says one young Nigerian man.

“Because of corruption I would chose to pay my tithe,” says a young man. “The so-called tax we know those who embezzle the money through corruption.”

Despite such concerns, Nigeria’s Federal Inland Revenue Service have stated that tax authorities have added 3, 414, 496 million new taxpayers to the national tax register under six months in 2016, bringing the total number of individual taxpayers in the country to 13.4 million,

In christianity they are called tithes and in Islam they are called zakat, and are voluntary contributions for the church/mosque to help the poor. However, like with taxes, many worry that the money is going to help the pastors enrich themselves.

“It is mandatory for every christian to pay tithe because if you do not pay god will definitely come for it, and you won’t like the way he comes for it,” says one Nigerian woman.

“I never miss my tithe, every sunday I get paid,” says one Lagos man. “But I won’t lie, I’ve never paid my tax because I just have never paid it.”

“I would rather pay my tithe, than tax, because I feel the government is cheating me, I’m feeling used,” says one young Lagos trader.

But despite peoples reluctance to pay their tax, even the bible says you must render onto caesar what is caesars.

Which would you rather pay – your tax or your tithe.

BattaBox heads onto the streets of Lagos, Nigeria to ask – when and how did you lose your virginity. It’s a question that gives an insight into the person and into society and their approach to sex.

And we came up with some interesting and honest answers, results, and insights into the reason why, when, and how Nigerians lose their virginity.

“I went to his house, and made him a good meal, and after eating, said let’s go to the bedroom, let’s do it small small, don’t pain me abeg,” explains one Lagos girl. “But it was not sweet, it hurt.”

“Definitely it was a good feeling, it was nice, that’s all,” says one Lagos guy.

Many of the Nigerians we asked said they lost their virginity after eighteen years old and even in their twenties. However according to the USAID/DHS, at least 27% of Nigerians first have sex under the age of eighteen. The average ages is between 15-24. Another survey done by Durex in 2012, “Durex’s Face of Global Sex,” found the average age people first have sex in Nigeria is 19 years old.

The age of consent in Nigeria is 18 and the reasons for people losing their virginity in Nigeria are extremely diverse.

Churches and Mosques in Nigeria advocate for abstention and to wait until you find the right person and are married, but it does appear that many Nigerians are not waiting until they are married. But we found a few:

“Ah, yes, I’m still a virgin,” says one young man. “I want to hold it until I get married.”

“I lost my virginity to my oldest sister’s best friend,” explains one Lagos guy. “I was a novice, so I didn’t know anything about sex, so the girl was just teasing me because she knew I was losing my virginity.”

However, there remain serious issues of consent in Nigeria, as we discovered when we asked one girl how she lost her virginity:

“We didn’t plan it,” says one Lagos girl. “It was my boyfriend, but the guy forced me, it was kind of rape.”

In 2015 Durex, the condom maker, polled around the world and found Nigerians to be the most sexually satisfied country in the world, with Nigerians spending not less than 24 minutes having sex.

As you can see from the map above – Nigerians report some of the most exciting sex life’s in the world.

Nigerians are very religious people, therefore, street evangelism and preaching is known to Nigerians and Africans. The preachers stand on the streets, in the bus, and anywhere there is crowd to preach the gospel to people, and hand them flyers, but do they end up winning any souls?

“It is our duty as a Christian, to reach out to people that don’t know about Jesus,”

BattaBox presenter Mary discovered a Nigerian man Mr Chibuzor Johnson who preaches the gospel on the streets of London, he talks about his quest to win souls for Christ and the challenges he faces.

“Some people find it funny, they say i’m crazy, but some are very happy that i do it,” says Mr Johnson

Some months ago a fellow Nigerian man was kicked off the bus in London, by Londoners, for disturbing the peace of the bus with his preaching. Since the white man brought Christianity to Africa, does this mean people in London do not believe in God anymore?

“Londoners have derailed from the lord,” says Mr Johnson

Mary further asks some people how they feel about street evangelism.

“This is very good and fantastic, we have to go round and win souls for him,” says one woman

While others didn’t think street evangelism is necessary at all.

“Its not going to make me become a proper christian,” replies one guy

Watch and enjoy!
