Only the men in the full collared white shirts were the smart ones. They correctly pointed out that there should be no difference in treatment of men and women. The other men hid behind ridiculous stories of religion, god, fake differences, etc. Nigeria is a nice place but the enormous influence of religion is going to continue causing damage. It isn’t about the word “feminism” which has different meanings for different peoples and situations. It’s about appreciating basic scientific ideas of life.

The objective of feminism is equality of the sexes. Feminism is also supposed to help men (perhaps in custody battles or prison sentences for example). When the sexes are unequal, or forced to perform within their assigned “roles”, it holds us back. With traditional gender roles for example, your value is determined by stringent rules: the male is the breadwinner, the woman is the homemaker. What happens the male can’t provide – suddenly he loses respect, esteem, is useless etc. What happens when the female can’t cook, clean, can’t have (or doesn’t want) children – she is seen as lazy, useless, selfish etc. And you see the pressure that it has on people, trying to live up to these rules. It’s better to derive value from people as human beings, before being male or female. If a male is a homemaker, he is useful. If a female is a breadwinner, she is useful. And vice versa. The problem is when we limit people to gender roles, they suddenly become useless when they don’t live up to them.

One man said that he would need a male child because it’s better for his son to gain his inheritance than his son in law. But this too, could be circumvented if the value was derived from being the man’s child fullstop. Not being the man’s son. This leads to pressure to have a boy child, and we have seen examples how that ends up for girl children; or perhaps they blame the mother. What good does that do? I know this is culture and tradition he is talking about though, so there will be no further explanation than just that, “culture”.

Just because people are different it doesn’t mean you should discriminate between them. White people and black people are also “different”, but they should be treated as equals. Treating them differently on the basis of their skin color is discrimination. These “differences” in behavior or thinking that people attribute to one’s race or gender are often times ideas, stereotypes or the result of socialization.
